The Federal Government has suspended 20 officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and set up a 10-member independent committee to investigate the deaths of 37 people held by the Corps' Niger State Command. The detainees were held on suspicion of illegal mining. Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the measures, saying the committee was established following a directive by President Bola Tinubu for a comprehensive, transparent and unhindered investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, 17 September 2026.
