The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has introduced a three-certificate model aimed at making Colleges of Education more attractive to young Nigerians and reversing declining enrolment in teacher training institutions. Under the new model, students admitted into Colleges of Education will graduate with three qualifications: a National Certificate in Education (NCE), a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree, and a skills certificate. The NCCE Executive Secretary, Angela Ajala, disclosed this shortly after a conference involving provosts of Colleges of Education across the North East at the College of Education (Technical), Gombe. Ajala said the new structure was part of a broader reform of teacher education under the commission’s dual-mandate programme, which is scheduled to commence in September 2026. She explained that the reform was designed to move teacher education beyond the traditional focus on classroom teaching by equipping graduates with practical and entrepreneurial skills.
