The Federal Government has suspended 20 officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps over the death of 37 miners in its holding cell. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 17, 2026. Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the suspensions and the constitution of a 10-member independent panel to investigate the deaths in a Saturday statement. He said the panel was set up following a directive by President Bola Tinubu for a comprehensive, transparent and unhindered investigation. The suspended officers include the Niger State Commandant of the Corps and several station guards and arresting officers.
