The Scottish Government has proposed three tailored immigration routes to attract foreign workers and graduates to Scotland. The proposals are contained in a policy paper titled 'Migration: supporting the future of Scotland's economy and communities,' aimed at addressing population decline, an ageing population, and labour shortages. The Scottish Government stated that migration will play an increasingly important role in addressing demographic pressures as deaths are expected to outnumber births and the working-age population declines. However, the proposed routes are not currently available visa schemes, as immigration remains a reserved matter for the UK Government, requiring agreement and cooperation with Westminster before implementation.
