The ongoing friction between the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors' Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the so-called 'Rainbow Coalition' has brought political parties as institutions to the forefront of Nigeria's political discourse. The article argues that in a representative democracy, a political party is an institutional ecosystem, not a loose collection of convenience or a mere franchise vehicle for rent-seeking operators. It emphasises that when a political party extends its platform, resources, and governance mandate to secure power, it enters into a social contract with the electorate.
