Meet Rosaline Ogunro, Nigerian-born woman who became mayor of Islington

Rosaline Ogunro, a Nigerian-born councillor representing St Peter's and Canalside Ward, has been sworn in as the Mayor of Islington in London for 2026/27. Born in Issele-Uku, Delta State, as the first of seven children, Ogunro moved to the UK in 2001 and studied English law at The Open University, earning an LLB Honours degree. Her emergence follows that of Jason Jackson, who became the first Nigerian-born mayor of Islington a year earlier, highlighting the growing presence of Nigerians in British civic leadership.
