Hope Behind Bars Africa, a Nigeria-based human rights organization, has petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) demanding an independent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners. The miners died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. The organization described the incident as a grave failure of the state's duty to protect lives and called for an immediate, independent, and transparent probe. It argued that the suspects had not been tried or convicted and were entitled to the presumption of innocence and fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
