Otunba Segun Showunmi, Chief Promoter of the Alternative Movement, criticized former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar's proposal to restore petrol subsidy, saying it would take Nigeria "back to Egypt." Atiku, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate for 2027, has said he would restore petrol subsidy if elected, arguing that Nigerians should benefit from the country's resources and that subsidy removal has worsened living conditions. Speaking in Abeokuta at a sensitisation and mobilisation programme for President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid, Showunmi rejected the proposal and defended the administration's economic direction. He questioned the effectiveness of past subsidies, noting they began in 1973 and have not yielded positive results.
