Tax Reform Won’t Deliver Without Taxpayers’ Trust, Says Ombud

The Tax Ombud and Chief Executive of the Office of the Tax Ombud, Dr John Nwabueze, has stated that Nigeria's tax reform agenda will not achieve sustainable revenue growth without building taxpayer trust, fairness, and accountability. Speaking at the 36th anniversary conference of the Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) in Lagos, he noted that enforcement alone cannot increase tax revenue. He highlighted Nigeria's low tax-to-GDP ratio of 8.2 per cent in 2023, compared to the African average of 16.1 per cent, stressing the need to strengthen domestic resource mobilization.
