Canada has introduced category-based selection under its Express Entry immigration system to help the country attract candidates with skills and experience in areas linked to specific economic needs. Under the system, candidates in the Express Entry pool can receive invitations to apply for permanent residence through category-based rounds if they meet the requirements for a category established by Canada's immigration minister. Candidates can be selected based on factors including language ability, work experience in specific occupations and education. The categories are announced in advance by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The 10 current Express Entry categories include French-language proficiency.
