Surgeons at Redeemer's Health Village (RHV) Hospital in Lagos, in collaboration with Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, have successfully performed what they described as the first tele-robotic surgery in West Africa. The landmark procedure involved a surgeon in Lagos remotely operating on a patient with a kidney tumour in Abuja using robotic surgical technology and a high-speed internet connection. The procedure was witnessed by selected journalists at RHV in Lagos. A robotic surgeon from RoboMed Global Inc., a US-based company, participated in the operation.
