Half the drones in a recent US Army combat exercise were designed to be expendable

The US Army recently conducted a combat exercise in which approximately 1,900 autonomous drones were used. About half of these drones were designed to be expendable, allowing soldiers to treat them like ammunition and not worry about retrieving or replacing them. This approach reflects a shift toward low-cost drones that can be used in large volumes, as demonstrated in the war in Ukraine. The Army is acquiring tens of thousands of drones through the Drone Dominance Program to ensure soldiers have enough systems for such tactics.
