Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, has called for a thorough, transparent and independent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State. Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, said the probe should establish the circumstances of the deaths, the conditions of detention, the medical attention provided and the actual cause of death. In a statement issued by his office on Sunday, he said the fact that the deceased were accused of illegal mining did not remove their right to humane treatment. He said every person deserved to be treated with dignity and in accordance with the law.
