As the 2026/2027 school session begins, parents in conflict-prone communities face fears for their children's safety due to ongoing insecurity. In Borno State's Askira-Uba Local Government Area, about 80 pupils abducted during attacks on schools in Mussa and Lassa in May and June 2026 remain in captivity, with some held for over 100 days. Only 56 of the area's 113 primary schools are functioning, while 57 are shut because of insecurity. The threat of abductions by terrorists and armed criminals is traumatising families and endangering education.
