Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has said that not all those who died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps last week were illegal miners. He cited the example of an Igbo man who had allegedly been detained for stealing from his employer before the incident and was among those who died. The governor spoke in Minna after attending a three-day fidau prayer for the repose of 37 illegal miners, held at the Tunga Central Mosque. He assured parents and guardians of the deceased that the government would conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, and a new commandant was named for the state.
