A woman identified as Soliat, suspected to be the mother of an abandoned newborn, has told the police that she left the child because she could not afford to care for her. Speaking off camera at the FCT Police Command in Abuja, she alleged that she became pregnant after being gang-raped by four men in Keffi, Nasarawa State. She said she gave birth and later placed the baby in a carton before abandoning her by the roadside in Galadimawa, Abuja, and hid nearby until a Good Samaritan found the baby and took her to Galadima Police Station. Soliat also stated that she had attempted to terminate the pregnancy but was unsuccessful, and that neighbours recognised her after the story became public.
