The Abuja-Kaduna railway route, which previously ran five daily trips from both ends, has been reduced to a single trip a day, leaving passengers to compete for limited tickets amid allegations of black-market racketeering. Services are also suspended on Wednesdays, reportedly to allow maintenance of train engines and rail tracks. The development has left commuters worried and the Nigeria Railways Corporation losing billions of Naira in revenue. Unofficial sources suggested the reduction followed a mechanical fault in one of the two locomotives serving the route.
