The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's proposed petrol production subsidy as an uncosted promise without a clearly identified legal and operational framework. The council challenged Atiku to explain how the proposal would guarantee lower petrol prices and comply with the Petroleum Industry Act. Its spokesman, Dele Alake, raised the issues in a statement, citing Section 205(1) of the PIA, which provides that unrestricted free-market conditions shall determine wholesale and retail prices of petroleum products. Atiku had reiterated the proposal for a production subsidy on locally refined petrol while urging President Bola Tinubu to cut petrol and diesel prices.
