Retired civil servants in Cross River State are facing severe hardship, with some receiving monthly pensions as low as N4,000. The Chairman of the National Association of Retirees of State Government of Nigeria in the state, Daniel Effiom, raised concerns that hunger, illness, and delayed retirement benefits are leading to untimely deaths among pensioners. Effiom appealed to Governor Bassey Otu for urgent intervention regarding unpaid gratuities and disparities in pension payments. Governor Otu has promised payment of a second tranche of gratuity.
