The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Monday that 20,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine have been allocated for a research vaccination programme in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The trial aims to improve understanding of the vaccine's effectiveness against the Ebola Bundibugyo virus and to protect individuals most exposed to it. While Ervebo has been highly effective against the Ebola Zaire virus, it is not yet known whether it provides meaningful protection against Ebola Bundibugyo disease, which continues to spread in the DRC. A total of 70,000 doses have been made available to Congolese authorities to support the outbreak response and related research. The epicentre remains Ituri province, though the virus has spread to seven provinces since it was confirmed in May this year.
