The United Kingdom has changed the eligibility rules for overseas-trained teachers seeking Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England, removing Nigeria, Ghana, and India from the list of countries whose teachers can use the direct application service. The Department for Education (DfE) said the change took effect on September 9, 2026. The DfE cited the lack of a national regulator in India and the use of public email addresses for work-history references in over 70% of applications from Ghana and Nigeria as reasons for the change.
