The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a full, transparent, and independent investigation into the deaths of 37 individuals who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. In a statement issued by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the Congress expressed deep sadness and concern over the loss of lives, which reportedly occurred after the victims were arrested during operations against suspected illegal mining activities in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas on September 15 and 16, 2026. The NLC noted that many of the deceased were young people, including minors, and commiserated with the government and people of Niger State. The Federal Government has constituted an independent committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
