The European Union has dismissed Russia's parliamentary elections as a veneer of democracy, with foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas proposing sanctions against individuals who facilitated the polls in occupied Ukrainian territories. Russia's ruling United Russia party secured a large majority amid tight restrictions on political opposition. In a statement posted on X on Monday, Kallas said the outcome was never in doubt and accused the Kremlin of silencing dissent, barring the only registered party that opposed the war in Ukraine, and shutting out international election monitors.
