South African authorities have opened separate investigations into Moriel Infrastructure Group's contractor gradings and government contracts. Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson instructed the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) to examine allegations that the company obtained multiple contractor gradings on the same day and may not have met all requirements for those gradings. The department said the gradings may subsequently have been used to secure government contracts, and the CIDB has been asked to report its findings to Macpherson. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has also directed the SANRAL board to establish whether Moriel was lawfully appointed and whether it is meeting its contractual obligations.
