A coalition of civil society organisations and other non-state actors converged for the 2026 Climate Week in Upenekang, an oil community in Akwa Ibom State, to rally residents for urgent action against oil spills and gas flaring. The conferees, including the Network Advancement Program for Poverty and Disaster Risk Reduction and Health of Mother Earth Foundation, lamented the destruction of farmlands and water pollution. Resource persons noted that fumes from oil and gas exploration by local and international oil companies have led to acid rains and other pollutants causing skin blights, roofing decays, early menopause in women, impotency in men, and subsequent death to residents, especially children. The forum was organised under the aegis of the Ibeno Youth Advocacy Network and supported by the Africa Greengrant Fund.
