More than 600 senior academics from universities across Northern Nigeria reportedly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election bid at a meeting in Kaduna convened by Ibrahim Masari, special adviser to the president on political matters. The endorsement was made with several northern governors and federal ministers in attendance. Daily Trust newspaper expressed concern that this collective, partisan endorsement by academics is dangerous given the role academics have traditionally played in Nigeria's electoral system. The newspaper acknowledged the right of individuals to support any political cause but questioned the implications for the credibility of the electoral process.
