The cost of an ordinary shopping basket in Nigeria has risen significantly, with a kilogramme of imported rice increasing from about N239 in January 2016 to over N2,255 by October 2025. A basket of groceries that cost N25,225 in 2020 now costs N147,050 in 2026, an increase of about 582 per cent. These figures illustrate how the economic crisis translates into household expenses. The economy is emerging as one of the central battlefields for the 2027 election, for both the ruling party and the opposition.
