The Nigeria Labour Congress and civil servants under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, Trade Union Side, demanded a new minimum wage of N500,000 and a reduction of petrol price to N500 per litre to address worsening economic hardship. In a letter to President Bola Tinubu, JNPSNC National Secretary Olowoyo Gbenga said workers also demanded the immediate constitution of a committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage ahead of January 2027. The NLC described the demands as realistic and legitimate, saying the recent increase in fuel prices to N1,430 per litre and above in some locations had worsened the cost-of-living crisis. The workers gave government a September 30 deadline for a fuel price slash and wage award.
