In Tanzania, the sea is moving inland – and taking livelihoods with it

In Pangani, Tanzania, seawater has pushed approximately eight kilometres inland along the Pangani River, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. The saltwater intrusion has carried salt into fields that once supported local farmers, with some coconut trees now yielding less than a third of their previous harvest. Mangroves are also following the saltwater inland, marking a shift in land use. One farmer, Buga Steven, told UN News that those living along riverbanks where mangroves are growing should receive grants to relocate.
