The United Kingdom has removed Nigeria and Ghana from its list of countries whose trained teachers are eligible for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England. The change, effective September 9, means teachers trained in these West African nations can no longer apply through the overseas-trained teacher route. The UK Department for Education stated that countries in the scheme must meet specific requirements, including having a national regulator to verify a teacher's professional status and provide authenticated references. According to the department, Nigeria and Ghana did not meet the reference-verification requirement, with data showing that over 70% of applications from teachers in Ghana and Nigeria include work history that could not be properly verified.
