The United Kingdom has removed Nigeria and Ghana from the list of countries eligible for the direct application route for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England, effective September 9, 2026. The Department for Education (DfE) cited updated eligibility requirements, including the need for a national regulator to verify teachers' professional standing and authenticated references. India was also removed under the revised rules. The DfE stated that Nigeria and Ghana failed to meet the reference-verification requirement.
