Former Cross River State governor and Peoples Redemption Party presidential candidate Donald Duke has stated that Nigeria's economy has effectively shrunk since the Second Republic. He noted that government spending and productive capacity have not grown in line with the population, which has increased from about 76 million to an estimated 230 million. Duke blamed the worsening cost-of-living crisis on decades of neglect of productivity, pointing out that Nigeria still operates around the same dollar-denominated budget as under former President Shehu Shagari. He made these remarks while speaking to journalists in Abuja.
