The Federal Government has initiated a reform of Nigeria's road transport sector aimed at safer roads, modern vehicle fleets, digital systems and stronger regulation. The sector currently carries more than 90 per cent of the country's passengers and freight, yet transport and storage contributes only 1.56 per cent to GDP. Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Abuja on Monday, Dr Tope Fasua, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, represented Vice President Kashim Shettima. He said the Initiative on Road Transport Transformation would prioritise road safety, professional driver development, digital systems for vehicles, drivers and infrastructure, modernisation of the national road network and improved private-sector management.
