The Federal Government has warned that child labour will not be tolerated in Nigeria, describing it as a crime. Dr Kamil Shoretire, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, issued the warning at a workshop in Abuja, where he clarified the roles of ministries, departments, and agencies in monitoring and enforcing child labour regulations. He stated that while the ministry has a clear policy on eliminating child labour, monitoring specialised sectors such as mining is primarily the responsibility of agencies directly regulating those activities. Shoretire added that legal mining operations are subject to prescribed criteria, and cases of illegal mining should be reported by local and state authorities.
