The Federal Government has inaugurated an independent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, ordered the suspension of the Niger State Commandant and officers on duty during the arrests and detention. A 10-member investigative committee has been given two weeks to submit its findings. The deaths occurred after security operatives arrested suspected illegal miners in the Wushishi-Lukoto area on September 15 and 16.
