The latest Afrobarometer Pan-Africa Profile shows that fewer than half of Africans have a reliable supply of electricity from the national grid. Based on surveys in 38 African countries in 2024/2025, grid reach varies widely, from 29% in Chad to 100% in Tunisia, Mauritius, Eswatini, and Cabo Verde. About 60% of households have a grid connection, but reliability remains a challenge, especially for rural and low-income households. On average, a majority of citizens negatively assess their governments' performance on electricity provision, and almost one-quarter report using alternative sources, most commonly solar power.
