US News & World Report ranks the best universities across the US every year, and while many top schools are private, every state has its own public system. Using US News' 2027 ranking, a list of the 21 top public schools was compiled. UCLA is tied for first this year for best state schools. The ranking comes as the cost and value of higher education are top of mind during the back-to-school season, with public schools generally being cheaper than private schools, especially for in-state students.
