Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has described the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps officials who handled the case of 37 illegal miners who died in custody as unprofessional. Bago made the remarks in Minna when he received officials of the Christian Association of Nigeria, who paid him a sympathy visit. He stated that the deaths could have been avoided and that the government would investigate the matter to its logical conclusion. He also prayed for the consolation of the deceased miners' families and called for continued peaceful coexistence among the state's diverse ethnic and religious groups.
