The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned that the misuse of generative artificial intelligence (AI) poses a growing threat to the credibility of the 2027 general elections. The commission said manipulated audio, video, and images, as well as targeted messaging, have made the threat 'no longer a distant, theoretical risk.' National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC's Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, made this known in Abuja at a capacity-building workshop for Public Affairs Officers. Haruna noted that generative AI has made it cheaper and more difficult to detect manipulated content, and can be used to target voters with conflicting messages.
