The Court of Appeal, Benin Division, has granted an interim order staying the execution of the Edo State High Court judgment in the kingship dispute over the stool of the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella. The order was granted on Tuesday following an application by HRM Michael Sado, the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, challenging the lower court's judgment on grounds of miscarriage of justice. In March 2026, Justice O.A. Otamere of the Edo State High Court had nullified Sado's appointment and ordered the return of deposed Lukeman Akemokue, holding that the removal process did not comply with fair hearing. The Edo State Attorney-General filed an application following the judgment.
