The World Health Organization (WHO), through the Pandemic Fund Project, supported the Ghana Health Service to strengthen Event-Based Surveillance (EBS) in nine districts across three regions. The support followed reports of an unusually high number of pig deaths in Birim North District, which triggered investigations involving the Ghana Health Service, Veterinary Services Directorate, Environmental Health Department, and other local government agencies. The response demonstrated that unusual events are often first noticed in communities, and rapid reporting and investigation can help authorities identify potential threats before they escalate. The EBS strengthening covered districts in the Ashanti, Eastern, and other regions.
