Call for strengthened African cooperation to address security threats that increasingly transcend national borders

At the Open Session of the African Union Peace and Security Council on "Good Neighbourliness and Regional Responses to Security and Terrorism Challenges in Africa," held in New York on the margins of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Corrine Amori Brunet, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Benin and PSC Chairperson for September, and H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AU Commission, called for strengthened African cooperation. They said such cooperation is needed to address security threats that increasingly transcend national borders. Minister Brunet underscored that Africa's response must be guided by the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, peaceful settlement of disputes, and solidarity among Member States. She noted that while borders define territories and sovereign responsibilities, they are also spaces where communities live, work, trade, and maintain family and cultural ties.
