The US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, welcomed 287 plebe candidates for the start of 'indoctrination', a 16-day period of intense mental and physical tests. During this time, candidates undergo activities such as getting their heads shaved, learning proper movements and responses, and enduring 'the Grinder', where they are commanded and corrected by their instructional cadre. After an emotional farewell to their families, the plebe candidates begin their journey toward becoming licensed officers in the US Merchant Marine. Most graduates go on to serve as licensed officers aboard commercial and government ships, and during wartime, they can become a critical part of the military supply chain.
