The Independent Committee of Inquiry established by the Federal Government to investigate the deaths of 37 illegal miners in NSCDC custody in Niger State has commenced its proceedings. The committee was inaugurated by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Ojo, on Tuesday, and held its inaugural meeting immediately after, adopting a work plan to guide the investigation. According to a statement signed by the committee's Secretary, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, the committee will visit all relevant sites, engage with government agencies, and interview survivors and suspects. Daily Trust had reported that about 60 young illegal miners were arrested and detained in an NSCDC cell, out of which 37 died of excessive heat, as confirmed by some survivors.
