The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has prohibited the mounting of checkpoints within 200 metres of the head of the 1st Niger Bridge. He issued the order on Wednesday during an inspection of ongoing maintenance work on the bridge, accompanied by ministry experts including the Anambra State Controller of Works, Emenike Chukwudi Timothy. Umahi appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to enforce the prohibition and urged the Anambra and Delta state governments to direct their taskforces to comply. He warned that creating hold-ups on the bridge is dangerous. The minister also announced that the bridge would be reopened for use next week, though additional maintenance work will be carried out to ensure quality engineering.
