Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), raising concerns about political defections in Nigeria. The defection comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) directing political parties to submit their membership registers by May 10, 2026, later extended to September based on a court ruling. Lawal, a political associate of Peter Obi since the 2023 elections, announced his membership of the new party on Tuesday, less than four months to elections.
