The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released its 2026 Annual Report of the Executive Board, titled 'Navigating a Precarious World', warning that rising public debt, a surge in artificial intelligence (AI) investment, trade reorientation, and the rapid growth of digital currencies are reshaping the global economy. The report covers the Fund's activities during the 2026 fiscal year (May 1, 2025–April 30, 2026) and notes that the global economy showed resilience despite geopolitical shocks, ongoing conflicts, and major shifts in the trading system. For Nigeria, the findings underscore the urgency of tackling high debt-servicing costs, positioning the country to benefit from AI-driven productivity, and adapting to a reoriented global trade and energy landscape marked by supply shocks from the war in the Middle East. The IMF identified four major forces shaping the global economy: rising public debt, which is constraining fiscal space; a surge in AI investment; trade reorientation; and the rapid growth of digital currencies.
