The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern over the rise in smear campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections. A Resident Electoral Commissioner, speaking at a stakeholders' meeting in Ibadan, said INEC had observed with deep concern an increase in abusive, intemperate, and inflammatory language during ongoing political campaigns. INEC threatened sanctions against those engaging in such acts. The commission urged stakeholders to adhere to peaceful and issue-based campaigning.
