Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has rejected claims that he left Anambra State with $123.7 million in debt in 2014, calling the figure 'very, very wrong public accounting.' In an interview on Arise News, Obi explained that the loans attributed to his administration were largely concessionary development facilities obtained by the federal government and on-lent to qualified states for specific projects. He said such facilities were multi-year programmes repayable over long periods, and the amounts cited did not necessarily represent funds drawn down or personally borrowed by his administration. Obi also backed the party leadership and rejected the OK Movement's parallel campaign structure, saying opposition parties must unite to defend democracy.
