Basil Agboarumi, former Managing Director/CEO of SAHCOL Plc and current Lead Consultant/CEO of The Onward Public Relations, has identified key factors behind the high mortality rate of Nigerian airlines. He attributed it to high operational costs and a lack of intentional government protection for operators. Agboarumi also cited astronomical operational costs and high, multiple taxation. He noted that over the last four decades, more than 100 Nigerian airlines have gone under, with an average lifespan of just five years between 2000 and 2020, and over 30 airlines closing in the last 25 years.
